Her Conversation with Patriarch Athenagoras - Interview by the Vatican Radio

Rocca di Papa, 18 July 1967

Presenter: "... Any day now, His Holiness, the great Roman Pope, will go on a pilgrimage in this old city.
"We take this great opportunity to bring the Churches even closer. We are nearing the goal of unity." These are the words expressed in these days by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Athenagoras, referring to the upcoming visit of Pope Paul VI to Istanbul and Ephesus.

Only You Exist. This is the Only Truth

Rome. (written before 1963)

Living everything “within”, living and dying, makes sense…

Those who love You sincerely, Lord, often feel Your presence in the silence of their room or in the depths of their heart, and this sensation moves them to the very core of their being.

They thank You for being so near to them – indeed, for being everything to them: for being the One who gives meaning to their living and their dying.

For with you is the fountain of life

Rome (Città Nuova), 25 December 2001

Commentary of the Word of Life:

For with you is the fountain of life. (Psalm 36:9)

... This Word of Scripture tells us something so important and vital that it can be an instrument of reconciliation and communion.
First of all it tells us that there is only one source of life, God. It is from God, from his creative love, that the universe is born and he makes it the home of humankind.
It is God who gives us life with all its gifts. The Psalmist knows the harshness and dryness of the desert and what it means to have a spring of water with all the life that flourishes around it. He could find no better image to sing of creation that springs like a river from the heart of God.

To Tell You that I Love You

Castel Gandolfo, January 29, 1998

Love needs declarations…

(...)

"Lately, wherever you went, you left a word that sums up a reality for that community. What word do you have to offer to us ?"

Chiara: A journalist in Palermo asked me the same question. She said: "We've understood that in the Movement you're able to sum up lots of things in just a few words," a life, I would say. “
Could you tell me about one of these slogans that you have?" “Well," I said, "I'll tell you the latest," and it's what I will tell you. It's what I mentioned to our focolarini priests.

The Mysteries of the Rosary

Rocca di Papa, 20 January 1981

In reciting the Rosary, Chiara goes through the spirituality that God gave to her, her whole Ideal

What I wanted to confide to you today is how I say the rosary.
The rosary is interposed by so-called mysteries, which are biblical events, generally proposed to us for meditation and for this reason, I think, that also our non-Catholic brothers and sisters will love the rosary, if they do not already love it. Spiritual teachers say that you can say the Hail Mary almost mechanically, and in the meantime think of that mystery mentioned at the beginning of the decade.
I have tried to do this and I've seen that in thinking of these mysteries, I revise the whole Ideal. So I thought: «This is what is needed, that every morning I know all my duties.» (...)

I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me ...

Rome (Città Nuova), 25 July 2000

Commentary of the Word of Life:

I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. (Jn 6:35)

In his Gospel John tells how, after the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus went to Capernaum. There he gave his discourse on the bread of life during which he said: ‘Do not work for food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you’ (Jn 6:27).
For those who were listening to him it was a clear reference to manna and also to the awaited ‘second’ manna that would come down from heaven in the Messianic age.

Yes to Jesus, No to our Ego

Sierre (CH), 16 September 1982

In the spirituality of unity the accent is placed on our yes to God. The no to our ego is a logical consequence

Dearest all,
"If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off ...” (Mt 18:8).
A few days ago, I read a wonderful passage from the letters of St. Paul, and it made me understand how he personally lived those "cuts" that Jesus speaks about.

Revolutionaries of communion. I count on you!

Mariapolis Araceli (Brazil), 31 May 1991

This is when the economy of communion was born. Chiara had just launched the idea and wants to involve also the young people of Brazil

You are very important because this turning point begins now, but it will explode later, when the young people, the Gen, will have a leading part.
So you must be formed with these ideas and be informed of all that happens. I heard that one of you has already begun to do something concrete. You must support him, help him, give him advice, share the responsibilities, do whatever you can...

Choosing God means choosing Jesus Forsaken

Rocca di Papa, 23 December 1983

Jesus revealed himself to Chiara as crucified and forsaken. The origin of this inspiration which is so vital for her and her Movement is described here

(...)
We have in fact felt the urgency not only of a legitimate desire, but also of the Church's guidance - which, to safeguard the authenticity of their inspiration, invites religious families and movements to refashion themselves in conformity to the times when the Holy Spirit brought them to birth.
When we look back to the beginnings of the Focolare, we see that, even before we had acquired ideas about the way to realize unity, a model was proposed to us, a figure, a life: that of Him who was able to truly "make Himself one" with all the human beings who have lived in the past, live now in the present, and will live in the future; He effected unity, paying for it by the cross, with His blood and His cry; He who has given His presence to the Church as the Risen One for all time, until the end of the world: Jesus Crucified and Forsaken.

Mary, Mater Unitatis

Castel Gandolfo, 8 December 1996

God progressively wanted to show Chiara who Mary is, with a climax during the “special” summer of 1949

As we briefly look over the history of the Focolare Movement with regard to Mary, we can see more clearly who Mary is for us...
From the earliest days of the Focolare, although during that period of time it seemed that she was letting the Spirit highlight almost exclusively Jesus and his gospel, Mary appeared, although discreetly, in order to reveal to us at once her relationship with unity.

Welcome one another

Rome ("Città Nuova"), 10 November 1992

Commentary of the Word of Life:

Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. (Rom 15:7)

These words are some of Paul’s final guidance in his letter to the Christians in Rome. This community, like many others spread throughout the Graeco-Roman world, was composed of believers who came partly from pagan and partly from Jewish origins. Therefore their mindsets, their cultural backgrounds and their spiritual sensitivities were very different. Such diversity gave an opening to judgements, prejudices, discrimination and intolerance towards others that were certainly not in accord with the mutual welcome that God wanted them to have.
